holiday shoppers say they ran for cover after a gunman wearing a white hockey mask started shooting inside a mall. >> i heard two shots and then after that i heard about 15, 16 more shots. and decided that that was gunshots so i hit the floor. >> good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. we're learning more tonight about a frightening shooting that happened at a mall near portland oregon. three people including the

gunman are dead. a fourth person is fighting for their life. amber lee is monitoring developments and is in the newsroom with what she's found out. >> reporter: the clackamas sheriff department says that they know who the gunman is but they're not ready to release the information. the festive mood turned into food and confusion after the gunman opened fire in the food court area. >> the shots were really loud and really scary. >> i heard three, and when i saw people ran i knew it was not a joke. so i started running. >> reporter: others said me announced i am a shooting before firing. a witness identifyed the gunman as a white man. >> wearing a hockey mask like a

friday the 13th kind of version of it. sort of white just plain faced hockey mask came jogging through the macy's running toward the public area. he was holding in full view an assault rifle. >> reporter: an army of officers came to the scene. he ran back into macy's. it's unclear how many shots were fired or if the man had more than one gun. >> i see a few people running into sears and away from the middle of the mall saying that they heard shots. >> reporter: this is video shot inside the mall as police evacuated shoppers. authorities have not identified the two people killed by the gunman. or a third person seriously injured. they say law enforcement officers never fired a shot. >> i can confirm that the shooter is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: there is no word

on what motivated the shooting. the mall was closed and authorities say it will remain closed again tomorrow. they also say a young woman is at a hospital tonight fighting for her life. reporting live, amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. here in the bay area there are questions about security at a walnut creek mall where a burglar or burglars stole jewelry from macy's in the middle of the night. ktvu's deborah villalon is at the mall and says this isn't the first time. >> you can see the plywood from the first time they smashed and the third one putting them inside. >> wow, unbelievable. >> reporter: shoppers are startled to see how thieves broke out two walls and went

inside and stole pearls and jewelry. >> terrible, i think it's a sign of the times. >> reporter: it happened at the same macy's store a few years ago. security cameras are key but as of tonight macy's hasn't turned over any surveillance video. >> it would be helpful. the sooner the better. we would like to try to recover the jewelry. >> reporter: police also wonder why when the alarm was tripped at 3:15 a.m. they weren't called until 4:28. >> our officers were on scene within a few minutes and were met by macy's security. i don't have an explanation for why the time lag in the reporting of the alarm. >> they want to try something bigger this time. >> reporter: this jeweler wondering if it's the same burglars who stole $10,000 in watches from his store. steps away from macy's six months ago. his back office still shows the damage from that break-in. after two men sawed through this exterior wall undetected. he believes security patrols at

broadway plaza could be better. >> they come here once an hour which is not enough especially at night. >> reporter: this store now puts every piece of jewelry in a safe at night and pulls down security shades. neither the mall or macy's will talk about this particular -- burglary or any changes they will make. we do know the burglars used a sledge hammer to break into the mall, because they left it behind. drivers first noticed lights were out at about 7:30. caltrans tells us a main circuit breaker tripped. crews say they took care of the problem and that all the lights were back on just after 9:00 this evening. now to the south bay where santa clara sheriff's deputy took three people into custody. it ended right at the base of mount hamilton.

sheriff department officials say deputies were suspicious of a white pickup truck so they checked the plates on the car and it came back as a stolen vehicle. the driver took off after being stopped but police eventually stoped the car and took everyone inside into custody. right now we're getting word of developing news in east oakland where police are investigating a shooting just south of the oakland coliseum. we have a photographer on the scene collecting information and we will bring you details as soon as we learn them. the word is now final, four fire stations will be closing. they slated to go dark next month. the county council voted unanimously to shut down the stations. the closures come after voters rejected a parcel tax last month that would have provided

revenue to keep those stations open. a collective in berkeley could soon be forced to close its doors. berkeley code enforcement says green leaf wellness group is violating city rules by conducting business in a residential area. it now afears mcafee will be releaseed from a detention center in guatemala as early as tomorrow. a judge ruled that his detention is illegal and that he should be released and mcafee's lawyer reiterated that claim. the judge gave mcafee ten days to get his immigration status in order. mcafee says he would like to return to the united states.

new details now on the latest homicide in san jose. tonight police are still trying to piece together what happened. matt keller is live now in san jose where the details just keep changing, matt. >> reporter: julie, the last of the police cars here on fair haven drive left in just the past hour. as officers investigate a homicide in what one neighbor told me used to be the safe zip code in san jose. things are not what they appear to be at this unusual crime scene just south of willow glen. even for the police. the original emergency call came in at about 3:00 this

afternoon for a vehicle accident. paramedics found this white chevy pickup truck against a tree and a person bleeding near by on the street. >> definitely not caused by a car accident. we don't know if that person was even in the car. >> reporter: investigators initially tell me they believe the victim was a 16-year-old boy who appeared to be shot. about two hours later they told me it is more likely the victim was stabbed in the neck and he could be 18 or older. >> if i could sum up this crime scene in one way it would be a geometry scene. there's a lot of angles. >> police say this neighborhood is not known for gang activity, and consider it an isolated incident. >> we've got a very nice neighborhood here. and we've never had anything like this before. >> stay home at night with the wife a little bit more. you know there's not a whole lot i think you can do.

what are you going to do? move? >> reporter: police tell me the coroner's office will make a final determination on what caused this person's death and give them the insight on the true identity of the victim. matt keller, ktvu. san francisco police have just released surveillance video that shows a man being robbed at gunpoint. the robbery happened on july 5th this year on laguna near cleary. two men drove away in that newer model dodge charger. police say these are photos of the two men that committed the crime. police are asking anyone with any information no matter how small you might think it is to call them. in eight minutes a break in the case of two people found bound and gagged in san francisco. one of whom has since died. what authorities told us today about the charges that five people are now facing. a maintenance worker was killed today in a crash in santa clara county. it happened around noon.

on mount hamilton road just south of the james lick observatory. highway police tell us the man who works in the observatory was working. >> it's hard enough driving when it's dry. but when it's snow the switch backs and the winding roads becoming very dangerous. authorities have not released the victim's name but say he was in his 50s. we are learning some horrible news details tails tonight about the plane crash that killed mexican american pop star jenni rivera. the jet carrying rivera and six other people plunged from more than 28,000 feet and that it hit the ground on a nose drive at a speed of more than 1,600- miles-an-hour. faulty breaks on a truck

caused last year's crash in nevada. investors said today that the semi skidded 300 feet right into the train. the mtsb concluded that the driver may have been distracted but they said there wasn't enough evidence to actually include that in their report. right now local crab fishermen are gearing up. in fact, some are heading out in just a matter of hours after being docked out because of a price dispute. tom vacar tells us how soon we could have crab. >> reporter: some tell us they expect to head out after midnight. >> i'm happy that we are going out and make some money finally. >> reporter: crab fishermen stopped fishing last week when

a massive natural gas pipeline destroyed six homes and shut down a major freeway this afternoon. fortunately no one was killed in the blast. tonight people who live near the line are being evacuated from their homes due to concerns about another explosion. authorities are still looking into the cause. two men are behind bars tonight after a short police chase. police say the chase started about 4:45 at durant and 14th. officers say they tried to pull over two men as a routine traffic stop.

but instead the men sped off and police gave chase. the two abandoned their car and tried to give chase on foot. it appears one man was carrying a gun. both men were eventually caught and arrested. more now on tonight's developing news in east oakland. we have learned a man was found shot to death on hawkins drive near armstrong drive. this is a residential area south of the coliseum. police were called out around 8:30 tonight and at the scene, our photographers saw at least two markers indicating shell casings. police have called for a translator saying that the victim's family are asian. at this time they are not sure what happened. police in san francisco have arrested five people in connection with a violent crime there involving two victims found bound and gagged in the middle of a residential street. as ktvu's david stevenson reports, four of the five people under arrest are women. san francisco police this afternoon announced arrests and

a violent crime that stunned this visitation valley neighborhood. two people, one identified as steven reed the other described as an 18 to 19-year-old woman found lying on russell street bound and gagged and badly injured. >> the male victim appeared to have blunt trauma. the female victim also appeared to have blunt force trauma. >> reporter: reed died later that night. the young woman is in critical condition but is recovering. >> investigators followed up on leads that led them to a house in hercules, california where we took into custody five individuals. >> reporter: police arrested 31- year-old maelene lintz and montrail brackens on murder charges. and tiler miller and heather leach and maryann manalastas are charged with accessory to murder. >> it was established there was a relationship between the

you have had your time, we understand your position. we understand your point. >> no i don't think you do. >> reporter: emotions ran high over whether the city of concord should force legal marijuana grows indoors. some living next door to the outdoor growing operations say the smell is offensive. but what they're most worried about is criminals coming into quiet neighborhoods like this one looking to take the plants by force if necessary. >> you get a little worried especially after a break-in that somebody is going to come with a gun or something else is going to happen and that's the worse case scenario. >> reporter: one grower said the only time his operation was targeted was following reports about his grow. >> by throwing it inside you're allowing that person to come into your house, threaten your family and hurt your family. when if you're sleeping at night and that person hops the fence and taking a plant, who does that hurt? >> reporter: the city council opted to send the issue to the

legal department says they want a way to protect the neighborhood without infringing on the rights of the growers. >> there has been some changes that we know we need to respond to as elected officials and try to find the balance in the community with rights on both sides. >> reporter: the city's legal department will now draft the ordnance it will likely limit growths to the inside of the primary resident on properties meaning no greenhouse and will likely only be enforced if there's a neighborhood complaint. christien kafton, ktvu news. today the state auditor released details on fraud and abuse cases. from april 2011 to june of 2012 the auditor says it completed 16 investigations totaling over $600,000. in the biggest case two state workers in los angeles

there were some horrifying moments tonight for a woman and her 8-year-old son after a molotov cocktail was thrown right through the window of their apartment. the woman told investigators she heard the sound of breaking glass then ran into the living room where the fire was burning. firefighters say they found both stories of the apartment in flames. fortunately she and her son escaped at this point no arrests have been made. police in hayward say two men are in custody after a smash and grab robbery at southland mall it happened not far from santa's village where children have their pictures

taken with santa. one suspect wearing a mask went into the mall around 12:15 this afternoon. they said he used a hammer to smash displays at the diamond ring company. that store is right next to santa's workshop. an accomplice waiting in a car helped him get away with $145,000 in jewelry. but officers were on their trail. >> vehicle came to a stop at cal rogan peterman where the vehicle stopped on its own with several units behind them. the driver was detained in the vehicle. >> reporter: the passenger ran into the neighborhood. half an hour later he was also taken into custody. the suspected killer of south bay teen sierra lamar is said to be arraigned tomorrow on new charges. garcia torrez facing three counts of attempted kidnapping stemming from alleged attacks at two morgan safeway stores back in 2009. garcia torrez is also expected to enter a plea tomorrow in the sierra lamar case. in news of the world tonight, in north korea the
